Simple Future (Will)

Express predictions, spontaneous decisions, promises and offers about the future

What is Simple Future with "Will"?

The simple future with "will" is your go-to tense for talking about what you think will happen, promises you make, and decisions you make at the moment of speaking. It's spontaneous, flexible, and one of the easiest tenses to form – just "will" + base verb!

Unlike "going to" (which shows planned intentions), "will" feels more immediate and less certain. When you say "I'll help you," it's a spontaneous offer. When you say "It will rain tomorrow," it's your prediction based on what you think, not a pre-made plan.

When to Use

1. Predictions Based on Opinion or Belief

Use "will" when you predict something based on what you think or believe (not evidence).

  • I think it will rain tomorrow.
  • She will probably pass the exam.
  • Technology will change our lives.
  • People will live on Mars one day.
  • He won't agree with you. (negative prediction)
  • The movie will be amazing!

2. Spontaneous Decisions (Made at the Moment of Speaking)

Use "will" for decisions you make right now, not planned in advance.

  • I'm hungry. I think I'll make a sandwich.
  • It's cold. I will close the window.
  • The phone is ringing. I will answer it.
  • I'm tired. I think I'll go to bed.
  • That looks good. I will have the same.

3. Promises and Offers

Use "will" when promising to do something or offering help.

  • I will call you later. (promise)
  • I will help you with your homework. (offer)
  • Don't worry, I won't tell anyone. (promise)
  • We will be there on time. (promise)
  • I will give you a ride. (offer)
  • I won't forget your birthday. (promise)

4. Requests and Asking for Help

Use "will" to politely ask someone to do something.

  • Will you help me with this?
  • Will you close the door, please?
  • Will you marry me?
  • Will you pass me the salt?

5. General Future Facts

Use "will" for facts about the future that are certain or scientific.

  • The sun will rise at 6:30 AM tomorrow.
  • Christmas will be on a Friday this year.
  • You will be 30 years old next month.
  • The store will open at 9 AM.

  • We will → We'll
  • They will → They'll

Negative Form: Subject + will + not + base verb

  • I will not go (I won't go).

Common Mistakes

  • I will to go home. → I will go home. (no "to" after will)
  • He will goes to school. → He will go to school. (base form, not -s form)
  • Will you to help me? → Will you help me?
  • I think it will rains. → I think it will rain.
  • She will be go there. → She will go there.
  • I will going to the store. → I will go to the store. (will + base, not will + going)
  • They will can come. → They can come OR They will be able to come. (can't combine will + can)

Practice Tips

  • 🎯 Will vs. Going To: "Will" = spontaneous, predictions, promises. "Going to" = planned intentions, evidence-based predictions. "I'll help you!" (spontaneous) vs. "I'm going to help you." (planned)
  • ⚡ Contractions matter: In speaking, almost always use contractions (I'll, won't, she'll). Full "will" sounds formal or emphatic. Practice saying "'ll" quickly!
  • 🤔 Think + will: When you see "I think," "probably," "maybe," "perhaps," it's almost always "will" (not going to). These show uncertainty/opinion.
  • 🗣️ Offers and promises: Train yourself: when offering help, use "I'll..." When promising, use "I will/won't..." These are natural patterns.
  • ✍️ Future predictions: Write 10 predictions about your life or the world using "will": "I will travel to...", "Technology will...", "In 10 years, I will..."
